Ghana and Saint Kitts and Nevis have signed an additional bilateral labour agreement aimed at improving conditions of service for Ghanaian nurses deployed to the Caribbean nation.

Under the agreement, Ghanaian nurses sent to Saint Kitts and Nevis will receive legally protected enhanced salaries, health insurance, rent allowance, end-of-service benefits, and full labour rights.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, and the Deputy Prime Minister of Saint Kitts and Nevis, Dr Geoffrey Hanley, signed the accord on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Commenting on the signing, Mr Ablakwa praised Ghanaian health professionals for their dedication and global reputation, noting that countries around the world continue to request their expertise. He added that Ghana remains committed to pursuing diplomacy that delivers tangible benefits to its citizens.

The initial bilateral agreement between Ghana and Saint Kitts and Nevis established the framework under the Ghana Labour Exchange Programme to send Ghanaian healthcare professionals to the Caribbean nation.

Signed to help relieve critical local staffing shortages in both community and hospital healthcare sectors, the original deal saw a cohort of 47 Ghanaian nurses deployed on a two-year service arrangement.

It established the baseline terms for their posting, including standard remuneration, basic accommodation, transportation, and core working conditions, which the newly signed additional agreement now expands with enhanced, legally protected benefits.
