The Gambia produced a remarkable comeback at the Accra Sports Stadium to defeat Ghana 4-2 on Matchday 2 of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, leaving the Black Stars winless after two matches.
Ghana appeared to be cruising toward a comfortable evening when Ernest Nuamah converted a 27th-minute penalty to open the scoring. Six minutes later, Felix Afena-Gyan doubled the hosts’ advantage with a brilliant direct free-kick, driving the home crowd into a frenzy.
However, the tide turned sharply eight minutes before the break.
Mohamed Badamosi pulled one back for the Scorpions from the penalty spot, setting the stage for defender Omar Colley to turn the game entirely on its head. Colley restored parity just before half-time, reacting fastest in a chaotic set-piece situation.
The visitors maintained their momentum after the interval and grabbed the lead in the 67th minute when Colley capitalized on a costly defensive mix-up in the Ghanaian backline. As Ghana pushed forward in desperation during late extra time, Colley capped off an astonishing performance by completing his hat-trick two minutes into stoppage time to seal a historic victory.
The result leaves The Gambia firmly atop Group C with a maximum six points from their opening two qualification fixtures. Ghana, meanwhile, remain rooted to the bottom of the group without a point following back-to-back defeats in their qualifying campaign.
