Ghana has temporarily halted tomato imports from Burkina Faso, as local yields are currently abundant enough to support exports to neighbouring countries, according to Mr Eric Osei Tuffour, Head of the Ghana National Tomato Traders and Transport Association.
Speaking on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, Mr Tuffour explained that although Ghana’s domestic tomato consumption remains significantly higher than that of its neighbours, local production has surged.
”As we speak, preparations are underway to export some of the tomatoes to Burkina Faso. The truth of the matter is that they are unable to purchase even up to five trucks. Ghana is able to import 50 trucks, but when we send five trucks from Ghana, they are unable to buy them,” he said.
He stressed the crucial role Ghana plays in the regional trade, adding: “Without Ghana’s imports, they would not know what they will use their tomatoes for. We buy 95 per cent of their tomatoes, but currently, we have enough in Ghana and are exporting some.”
Mr Tuffour expressed optimism that the current supply will comfortably sustain the country through to the middle of December, with high production potentially lasting into early January 2027 before any potential shortage occurs.
”We will have more tomatoes that can last by early January 2027, then we may encounter a shortage. However, if we are able to sustain these gains, I, Osei Tuffour, will personally commend the Minister for Food and Agriculture. We have to sustain these gains so we will cut down on importation,” he noted.
He further disclosed that the Minister for Food and Agriculture has given the association strong assurances that strategies are in place to sustain tomato production beyond December 2026.
