Manhyia South MP Nana Agyei Baffour Awuah has had his official premises and personal residence searched by investigators from the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).
The action was taken after anti-graft officers obtained a search order from the Accra High Court.
This latest enforcement step came on the heels of an extensive interrogation session lasting well over an hour at EOCO’s headquarters.
The lawmaker had voluntarily turned himself in earlier in the day to answer questions, responding directly to the judicial warrant granted for his apprehension on Wednesday, September 30.
Accompanying the legislator to the investigative agency were his lead legal counsel, Samuel Atta Kyea, alongside several parliamentary colleagues, including Subin MP Obiri Yeboah, Kofi Amankwah Manu, and former Deputy Attorney-General Joseph Kpemka.
The High Court approved the application for the warrant after state prosecutors informed the judge that all conventional channels to invite the MP for questioning voluntarily had failed. Tensions had previously flared outside the Accra High Court premises, where an earlier attempt by EOCO operatives to detain the lawmaker led to a dramatic confrontation.
The ongoing inquiry centers on financial irregularities linked to SIC Life Savings & Loans Company Ltd, where the MP is suspected of involvement in unauthorized monetary activities.
Detailing the severity of the allegations, Deputy Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, stated that the state is looking into potential infractions involving money laundering, the waste of public resources, and causing financial loss to the state.
EOCO officials confirmed that the property searches remain crucial to gathering necessary evidence as the investigation continues.
