The Minister for Food and Agriculture, Dr Eric Opoku, has urged Ghanaians to stop purchasing imported chicken and instead patronise locally produced poultry to revive the country’s livestock sector.
Speaking to farmers at Pomaakrom in the Asunafo North Municipality, where he presented irrigation equipment and fertilizer bags to vegetable growers, the Minister warned that reliance on foreign poultry enriches external economies at Ghana’s expense.
Dr Opoku, who also serves as Member of Parliament for Asunafo South, explained that choosing local chicken directly enables domestic farmers to expand operations and create jobs for young people.
“When you buy imported chicken, you develop the economy of the exporting country, leaving Ghana with no economic gain. Consuming home-grown poultry empowers local producers to scale up production and employ more youth,” he stated.
Addressing vegetable farming challenges, Dr Opoku declared that Ghana, under President John Dramani Mahama’s leadership, will cease tomato imports from Burkina Faso.
He urged beneficiaries to make effective use of the donated irrigation kit for dry-season farming, adding that the government plans to distribute additional equipment under structured agreements to support year-round agricultural production.
