Anxiety has mounted among passengers and commercial vendors at the Adawso landing site in the Kwahu Afram Plains South District following a fresh accident involving a loaded haulage vehicle at the water crossing.
The vehicle lost stability while maneuvering to board the pontoon connecting Adawso to Ekye Amanfrom, sliding off the slipway into the deep waters of the Afram River. Both the driver and his assistant managed to scramble clear of the sinking cab before it disappeared beneath the surface.
The mishap has triggered extensive delays along the vital transport corridor, stranding scores of cargo vehicles, passenger buses, and traders attempting to move agricultural produce across the district boundary. As in past emergencies, community canoe operators stepped in to assist with immediate rescue and recovery operations.
Frustrated motorists and local business owners have once again voiced outrage over infrastructure neglect at the ferry terminal. Transporters point out that the sole vessel servicing the route has been running on just one functional engine for years, creating hazardous boarding conditions and frequent operational stalls mid-stream.
The chronic delays force commercial transporters and traders to endure long waits at the riverbanks, incurring heavy financial losses while taking significant risks on aging equipment.
Officials from the Volta Lake Transport Company and the Kwahu Afram Plains South District Assembly have yet to issue a statement regarding the disaster. Meanwhile, salvage teams are attempting to recover the submerged vehicle to clear the channel for resumed transit.
