Ghana and the United Kingdom have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening their historic bilateral ties following a high-level diplomatic meeting in Accra.
The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, held talks with the British High Commissioner to Ghana, His Excellency Christian Rogg, to review the ongoing partnership between both nations.
Speaking on the engagement, Hon. Ablakwa described the discussions as highly productive, noting that both countries assessed key areas of mutual cooperation, including trade, investments, regional security, and upcoming diplomatic engagements.
A central focus of the discussions was the notable increase in UK investments in Ghana.
Hon. Ablakwa highlighted the upcoming Takoradi port expansion project, scheduled to commence later this year, as a major benchmark of the expanding economic ties. The project is set to enhance Ghana’s maritime infrastructure and boost regional trade.
The Foreign Minister commended the UK government for its active participation in two key international fora hosted on the sidelines of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York: the side event on reparatory justice and the Accra Reset convening.
Preparations are also underway for President John Dramani Mahama’s upcoming official visit to the United Kingdom. Additionally, the meeting served as an opportunity to align priority issues and review logistical arrangements for Ghana’s delegation to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) next month.
Addressing regional stability, both leaders praised the progress achieved under the UK-Ghana security partnership. In light of rising security challenges across West Africa, both parties committed to deepening technical and operational collaboration to combat organised crime and counter violent extremism.
Hon. Ablakwa reiterated that Ghana and the United Kingdom continue to cherish a deeply rooted historical bond founded on shared democratic principles, mutual respect, and common goals.
