A National Chairman hopeful of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Nii Armah Ashitey, has asserted that the NDC consistently places the country on the right path of development whenever it is in power, contrasting this with what he described as the poor management record of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Speaking on Rainbow Radio’s Weekend Show, Hon. Ashitey said the NDC’s track record in government demonstrates its commitment to responsible governance, infrastructure delivery, and the improvement of the living conditions of Ghanaians.
He argued that the party’s performance in office speaks for itself and should be judged by the tangible developments it has delivered across the country.
Drawing on his personal experience as former Chief Executive, or Mayor, of the Tema Metropolitan Assembly (TMA), Hon.
Mr. Ashitey said the NDC administration left substantial funds and a strong development foundation for the Assembly. According to him, the resources were meant to sustain ongoing projects and support further growth in Tema, one of Ghana’s most important industrial and commercial hubs.
He alleged, however, that when political power changed hands and the NPP took over the affairs of the country, the funds left behind were mismanaged. Hon. Ashitey claimed that the misapplication of resources affected the momentum of development in the metropolis and disrupted plans that had been carefully laid out during his tenure.
“The records are there for anyone to check,” he said, inviting Ghanaians to assess his time at the TMA and the level of development achieved in Tema under his leadership. He maintained that his administration implemented massive and impactful development initiatives that transformed the metropolis and improved public infrastructure.
Hon. Ashitey further accused the NPP of “scattering everything” after assuming office, insisting that the party failed to build on the gains made by the NDC. He said the situation in Tema reflects a broader pattern, which he believes demonstrates the difference between the two major political parties when it comes to managing public resources and sustaining development.
The former Tema Mayor, who also served as Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, Greater Accra Regional Minister, and Minister for Employment and Labour Relations, is seeking the NDC’s National Chairmanship position. He has presented his long experience in local government, Parliament, and ministerial roles as evidence of his capacity to help strengthen the party’s structures and support the current administration.
During the interview, Hon. Ashitey also praised the current NDC administration for the work it has done so far. He expressed confidence that the government is steering the country in the right direction and urged party members and supporters to remain united behind its agenda.
