President John Dramani Mahama has officially inaugurated a newly constructed 85-bed ward at the Ghana Police Hospital, naming the facility in honour of the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Christian Tetteh Yohunu.
The commissioning formed a central part of landmark events commemorating the golden jubilee of the health facility, which has delivered critical medical care to police personnel and the wider public for half a century.
Addressing attendees at the ceremony, President Mahama lauded both the hospital management and the wider hierarchy of the Ghana Police Service for maintaining an unwavering focus on healthcare excellence.

He underscored that the modern expansion stands as an enduring tribute to the IGP’s forward-thinking leadership and persistent advocacy for staff welfare.
Furthermore, the President reaffirmed the government’s resolve to continually resource the Police Service with essential infrastructure and logistics, noting that robust logistical support remains vital for bolstering both national security and healthcare delivery outcomes.
Accepting the honour, the IGP, Mr Christian Tetteh Yohunu, highlighted that the new ward would significantly boost on-site specialist care.
He pointed out that the facility will curb the financial burden and logistical strain previously incurred from transferring patients to external centres.

Mr Yohunu further emphasised that the true measure of the ultra-modern block would transcend its aesthetic appeal or advanced medical gadgets, stressing that its real impact will be reflected in the standard of care and compassion extended to every patient who walks through its doors.
“This landmark facility marks a major step in standardising health as a fundamental human right for the Ghana Police Service. This principle matters because officers’ ability to protect life and property depends largely on their physical and mental well-being.

“Most importantly, the complex will allow more specialised care to be provided on site, reducing the need to transfer patients elsewhere and helping to minimise the associated costs and inconvenience,” the IGP said.
He concluded by expressing deep gratitude to President Mahama for his consistent backing of the Police Service and his proactive interest in the wellbeing of its personnel.
The new complex includes separate male and female medical and surgical wards, as well as dedicated male and female paediatric wards.

The IGP described the paediatric unit as the first of its kind at the hospital since its establishment five decades ago.
It is also equipped with diagnostic and patient-monitoring equipment, an in-house laboratory, a pharmacy, an elevator for transporting patients and medical supplies, administrative offices and parking space for approximately 50 vehicles.
A welfare shop has also been provided to serve patients and other users of the facility.
