Parts of the nation’s capital, Accra, were plunged into darkness early Wednesday morning following a major fire outbreak at the Mallam Substation.
The incident, which occurred at approximately 2:36 a.m. on Wednesday, 14th October 2026, was caused by an unexpected fault on one of the primary transformers situated at the installation. The resultant blaze disrupted the electricity supply to several communities dependent on the facility for power transmission.
Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service were immediately dispatched to the scene to handle the emergency. Firefighters managed to contain the situation promptly, preventing the flames from spreading further and successfully putting out the fire.
In an official press statement released by the power transmitter, the Ghana Grid Company Limited confirmed that supply has been partially restored to some of the affected areas, while technicians work round the clock to fix the broader issue.
“Power supply has been restored to parts of the affected areas, while efforts continue to restore supply to the remaining areas as quickly as possible,” GRIDCo stated in the release issued by its Corporate Communications Section.
The power system operator further assured the public that a full-scale investigation into the root cause of the fault has commenced alongside arrangements to swap out the damaged infrastructure.
“GRIDCo’s engineers are investigating the cause of the fire, and process has been initiated to replace the affected transformer as soon as possible,” the power transmission company added.
Extending an apology to consumers impacted by the unexpected blackout, GRIDCo expressed gratitude to residents and commercial entities for their composure as work continues at the substation.
“GRIDCo sincerely apologises for the inconvenience caused and thanks all affected customers and stakeholders for their patience and understanding,” the statement concluded.
