The High Court has heard legal arguments concerning the bail application pending trial for Bernard Antwi Boasiako, widely known as Chairman Wontumi.
Counsel for the applicant presented their case before the court, which was met with stiff opposition from representatives of the Republic.
Following the submissions from both sides, the presiding judge adjourned proceedings to Wednesday, November 4, at nine o’clock in the forenoon to deliver a ruling.
In the wake of the adjournment, the applicant has been escorted back to the Nsawam Medium Security Prison, where he will remain in custody pending the court’s decision next month.
The convict was sentenced to a term of twenty years’ imprisonment following his conviction on charges pertaining to unlawful mining operations situated within a concession at Samreboi, Western Region.
This application, originally fixed for hearing on August 19, suffered an adjournment due to the unexcused non-appearance of both the Applicant and his lead legal practitioner, Samuel Atta Akyea, resulting in the matter being re-listed for hearing today.
In response, learned counsel representing the Republic, through the Attorney-General, has filed an affidavit in opposition resisting the motion.
The State contends that the convict, a former regional chairman of the ruling party, represents a substantial flight risk who ought to remain in custody during the pendency of the appellate proceedings.
