Healthcare workers at the Greater Accra Regional Hospital (Ridge) have been urged to translate knowledge gained from continuous capacity-building initiatives into superior clinical outcome and enhanced patient safety.
The charge was given by the Director-General of the Ghana Health Service (GHS), Dr. Samuel Kaba Akoriyea, during an emergency life support training exercise held at the facility on Wednesday, 14th October 2026.
Organised in partnership with Sanford Health Ghana, the intensive refresher programme brought together international health experts and local medical administrators to sharpen the skills of frontline medical staff in handling critical medical conditions.
Focus on Life-Saving Interventions
The training covered three core modules: Basic Life Support (BLS), Paediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
Facilitated by USA-based Nurse Specialist Educator Travis Spier from Sanford Health, alongside the Nursing and Midwifery Administration of Ridge Hospital, the sessions provided practical drills and theoretical updates.
Participants were equipped with modern clinical approaches to quickly identify and manage severe, life-threatening emergencies in both paediatric and adult patients.
Strengthening Frontline Capabilities
Speaking at the event, the Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs. Rita Komla Akoto, noted that continuous professional development remains vital to building a highly competent nursing and midwifery workforce.
She called on the trainees to actively deploy the newly acquired techniques in their daily clinical workflows to ensure rapid response and higher survival rates during medical emergencies.
Highlighting the global partnership, Dr. Kwaku Darkwaa, Chief Medical Officer at Sanford World Clinics–Ghana, elaborated on Sanford’s ongoing operations and its positive contributions towards elevating standard healthcare delivery in Ghana.
The Sanford Health delegation was led by Karoliina Slack, Vice President of Sanford World Clinic, alongside Chief Nursing Officer Erica DeBoer and Nursing & Clinical Service Consultant Kim Martens.
The exercise forms part of Ridge Hospital’s ongoing commitment to partner with international healthcare stakeholders, improve clinical competencies, and uphold maximum safety standards for all patients.
