Police in Ogun State, Nigeria, have rescued eleven Ghanaian nationals who were allegedly lured to the country and held against their will under the pretext of securing travel visas to Canada and Spain.

The victims, comprising seven men and four women, were freed during a targeted security operation in Sagamu, a town situated in southwestern Nigeria, following a intelligence tip-off.

Preliminary investigations indicate that each victim paid approximately $3,400 to the perpetrators with the expectation of obtaining valid European and North American travel documents. Upon arrival in Nigeria, however, they were detained against their will by members of the suspected trafficking syndicate.

Law enforcement authorities confirmed that the rescued individuals are currently receiving necessary care and support services while a manhunt continues for those behind the fraudulent scheme.

While no arrests have been announced yet, police officials emphasized that investigations remain active to track down all individuals connected to the operation. Confirmed timelines for the victims’ safe repatriation to Ghana are yet to be established.

Following the development, police authorities have cautioned citizens seeking opportunities abroad to exercise extreme vigilance and thoroughly verify the legitimacy of travel agents and visa offers with official bodies before making any payments.
