Transport Operators Threaten 2028 Vote Against Govt Over TraffiTech System

October 28, 2026

Transport operators across the country have issued a stern warning to the government, threatening to campaign and vote it out of power in the 2028 general elections if the implementation of the controversial TraffiTech initiative is not immediately reviewed.

The agitation follows a declaration by the Chief Executive Officer of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, that drivers who record six TraffiTech violations within a two-year period will face automatic license revocation and be compelled to re-enroll in driving school.

Reacting to the development in a press statement, the National Chairman of the Drivers and Car Owners Association, Akwasi Amoah, described the proposed enforcement measures as harsh, punitive, and structured to collapse their livelihoods.

The association questioned the fairness of revoking licenses based on automated camera detections when the country continues to grapple with unmarked speed zones, malfunctioning traffic lights, erroneous camera fines, and a lack of proper public sensitization regarding the system.

“You cannot take food from the mouths of thousands of drivers and car owners in the name of TraffiTech,” Mr Amoah stated, emphasizing that commercial drivers rely entirely on their daily earnings to sustain their families.

The group is demanding an immediate suspension of the six-violation revocation rule, a reduction in the current fine structure, and a complete review of the TraffiTech contract. They are also advocating a one-year public education campaign and warning period, alongside urgent repairs to damaged road signs and faulty traffic signals nationwide.

The transport operators have issued a seven-day ultimatum to the government to invite leadership to the negotiation table, warning that failure to engage will result in a total strike and a nationwide demonstration.

Elaborating further on the matter during an interview on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM, the National Chairman of the Transport and Drivers Welfare Union of Ghana, Samuel Adu-Yeboah, insisted that their position is fully justified.

He clarified that while transport operators are not opposed to road safety measures, the current iteration of the TraffiTech system functions more as an extortion tool than a legitimate safety mechanism.

He expressed deep regret over the lack of prior stakeholder consultation, stressing that implementing such a consequential policy without engaging key sector players remains unacceptable.

“Our position is fully justified. We are not opposed to road safety measures, but the current iteration of the TraffiTech system functions more as an extortion tool than a legitimate safety mechanism. It is regrettable that there was a lack of prior stakeholder consultation. Implementing such a consequential policy without engaging key sector players remains unacceptable. The government should suspend the implementation and consult us on the initiative.”
