‘Prof. Oquaye best Speaker we’ve had, maintain him’-Ras Mubarak

December 23, 2020

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Kumbungu Ras Mubarak has described Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye as Ghana’s best Speaker of Parliament.

The outgoing MP who lost in the NDC primaries said although the Speaker has his strength and weaknesses, he is one of the best Speakers Ghana has had.

Ras Mubarak said this in an interview with Kwabena Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm when he was asked if he would want to see the Speaker retained in the 8th parliament.

According to him, he has observed parliamentary proceedings since 2004 until he entered the house in 2017 and can boldly say, Prof. Oquaye is one of the best.

He mentioned reforms brought in by the Speaker saying he is committed and firm.

He touched on the passage of the Private Members Bill saying he (Prof. Oquaye) was a key person in ensuring the bill was successful.

He said other parliaments had taken steps to have a private bill passed but were unsuccessful, under the current Speaker, they have been successful.

However, Prof. Oquaye has been instrumental.

“Prof. Quaye has his strengths and weaknesses but he is one of the best speakers parliament has had. I can tell you that for a fact.”

He has therefore advised the NPP to retain him as Speaker for the 8th Parliament because he was hopeful he would be able to manage both sides well.

He added despite the disagreements, he believes the Speaker is the best.

Meanwhile, he says the Parliament of Ghana is better off with a former MP as a Speaker compared to someone from the justiciary.

He said it would not be effective for a Speaker to be appointed from outside parliament.

He said if he were to make a decision, he is encouraging the NPP to nominate the Speaker because he is a safer pair of hands and best placed to shepherd and navigate parliament through the current situation.

He said you need an experienced hand in parliament to manage the house with the current number of MPs on both sides have.

Parliament he concluded does not need a deadlock hence an experienced person like Prof. Oquaye will be best for the House.
