Threatening drummers with the military at Rawlings’ funeral was terrible-Ablakwa blast Archbishop

January 27, 2021

The Member of Parliament for North Tongu, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has taken a swipe at Archbishop Peter Sarpong, the presiding minister for the funeral of the late Jerry John Rawlings.

The legislator expressing his disappointment in the man of God for threatening to cause the military to arrest traditional drummers during the ceremony at Independence Square was terrible.

He said drumming is not demonic for the Archbishop to have made such unfortunate comments and threats against people who were mourning the late ruler.

“The priest’s outburst is terribly unfortunate. There is absolutely nothing demonic about traditional drumming in church. The venerable Archbishop Peter Sarpong has globally celebrated theological works vindicating this position. It is indeed tragic that some of our churches have refused to be decolonized. What makes our fontomfrom unwelcome in church but Belgium’s saxophone will supposedly draw us closer to Heaven?”

He added: “Secondly, threatening civilians with the military merely because they are engaged in traditional drumming is most offensive to the memory of the outstanding soldier lying in state. This is exactly the kind of misuse and desecration of the revered Ghana Armed Forces Flt. Lft. J.J. Rawlings risked his life to challenge.”

I do not intend to mar the solemnity of President Rawlings’ funeral service, however, certain fallacies and maladies must be boldly confronted.

Let us continue to pray for divine emancipation, total liberation and sincere kindness towards one another irrespective of artificial barriers or class identities.
