E/R: Chieftaincy disputes threat to national security, please intervene-House of Chiefs to Prez

The Eastern Regional House of Chiefs has described prevailing chieftaincy disputes in the region as a national security threat.

It is the view of the House that the disputes require urgent attention.

The House made this known when they paid
a courtesy call on President Akufo-Addo at the Jubilee House today, Tuesday, January 11, 2022.

Leader of the delegation and the President of the Eastern regional House of chiefs, Nene Sakite II, in his remarks, requested for the direct intervention of President Akufo-Addo to help resolve the disputes.

“Your excellency, one of the problems facing us in the region is the numerous chieftaincy litigations that has hit most of the traditional areas in the region”.

“5 out of the 11 paramountcies in the region are inundated with chieftaincy litigations which is affecting the activities of the House” Nene Sakite II said.

“We are therefore soliciting for your assistance in settling these numerous litigations which has become a national security threat in my opinion” he added.

Environmental protection

On the issue of environmental protection, Nene Sakite commended the President for his efforts at maintaining the environment.

He observed that to him, there is an eleventh commandment and that is “though shall not destroy the environment”.

He appealed to Ghans to rally behind the President and his government to ensure that “various parts of the country will continue to witness massive developments in the years to come”.

President Akufo-Addo in his response acknowledged that chieftaincy disputes in the Eastern Region are a matter of concern to his administration.

To address the issue, President Akufo-Addo suggested that his administration will prioritize the finding of resources for the Judicial committee of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs to support their efforts aimed at resolving these issues.

“I think that finding the resources to empower the Judicial committee of the Eastern Regional House of Chiefs, Mr Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious, thus has to be a priority for us” President Akufo-Addo said.

“Because I have no doubt that that is one of the stumbling blocks to the rapid resolution of these conflicts and disputes” he added.
