UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson has expressed optimism that he was hopeful a new leader will emerge to take over from him and move the country forward.
He made the remarks when he announced his resignation on Thursday, July 7, 2022.
He asserted that in politics, none is remotely indispensable and was sure that the party will produce another leader who is equally committed to taking this country forward through tough times.
He was also hopeful the new leader would be able to help cut taxes because that is how to generate growth and the income we need to pay for public services.
He promised to give the new Prime Minister his support stressing that his resignation brought joy to many whereas a few are disappointed
He announced his resignation as Conservative party leader following a wave of government resignations.
“It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative party that there should be a new leader of that party and therefore a new prime minister,” he said on Thursday.
“I’d agreed with Sir Graham Brady, the chairman of our backbench MPs, that the process of choosing that new leader should begin now. And the timetable will be announced next week.”
“So I want to say to the millions of people who voted for us in 2019, many of them voted Conservative, for the first time. Thank you for that incredible mandate. The biggest Conservative majority, since 1987,” he added.
