Blanket implementation of free SHS was just for votes, populist- Mahama

September 14, 2022

Former President John Dramani Mahama has slammed the current administration’s approach to implementing the free senior high school policy.

He stated that there is a problem with quality, infrastructure, and the feeding of children in our schools, among other issues.

Mr. Mahama emphasised that there are numerous issues and that he does not believe the policy is being implemented effectively.

He posited that the purpose of the Constitution drafters saying that introducing it progressively is that it should target first the poor in society and then as the country grows in resources, you can bring in more people.

But to just go and start a blanket thing and say nobody pays and so everybody to secondary school for free, I think that was populist. I think the president wanted to win an election so it was populist. And then they just did it to attract votes.”

Prez calls for National Dialogue on Free SHS

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo recently gave his support for a national dialogue on the government’s Free SHS programme.

He indicated that such a discussion should include funding, access, and sustainability.

Speaking at a meeting with the leadership of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) at Jubilee House, the President stated that, while some people have criticised the policy, it was here to stay.

“One of the things people are calling for is a review of free SHS. I think we should have a broader conversation about the incidence of education on our national development, and therefore also on our budgetary and public sector contributions to national education.”
