Ghanaian politicians against new constitution because the current one allows them to steal from us – EFL

January 9, 2023
Ernesto-Yesboah-EFL-785x424

Founder and Leader of the Economic Fighters League, Ernesto Yeboah, has declared that Ghana’s 1992 Constitution has failed to deliver economic democracy.

The outspoken youth leader argued that although Ghana’s constitution has maintained political stability, there is no economic democracy or economic freedom.

To solve this problem, he proposed a new constitution that would promote economic democracy.

He dismissed claims that the call for a new constitution is a call for a coup.

Such assertions, he added, are not based on sound reasoning, and a new constitution could be drafted without causing harm to the people.

Ernesto Yeboah noted that our politicians do not support calls for a new constitution because it allows them to steal from the people.

“Call any politician and ask him or her whether we should design a new constitution,” he said on Nyankonton Mu Nsem on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm. No, the answer is no. No, because the current constitution allows them to steal from us. Ex-gratia is one example. Thievery is the ex-gratia. It is simply stealing from the people”.

Ernesto Yeboah stressed that our politicians are benefitting from the constitution, and their response would be; it is the constitution that is allowing them to steal from us”.

”The constitution has some benefits. The benefits are that it has allowed us to have political stability. One of the major benefits of the 1992 constitution is that it has given us political stability. But economic stability has not been achieved; the cedi is always depreciating against the dollar and other currencies. The economy is not strong. How many people have jobs? That is why several Ghanaians are of the view that the constitution is not fit for the purpose of bringing about economic and social democracy.”

He also posited that Ghana does not have a democracy, and ge premised his point on the fact that the constitution is developed based on our inequality, and we cannot continue like that.

He took on Ghana’s parliament saying, it is extremely partisan, with the MPs cutting deals among themselves at the expense of Ghanaian voters.
