Editor of the Informer Newspaper, Andy Kankam is alleging that the Vice Chancellor of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Pre. Fr. Prof. Afful-Broni is doing worse things than what he accused his former boss Professor Avoke of.
Speaking in an interview with Kwabena Agyapong on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, Andy Kankam said, he has in his possession evidence to prove that, the current Vice Chancellor has signed dubious contracts, a similar action that he used to oust Professor Avoke.
Professor Avoke and four principal officers of the UEW, including the Finance Officer, Dr Theophilus Senyo Ackorlie, Daniel Tetteh, Mary Dzimey and Frank Owusu Boateng, were interdicted by the university after it emerged that some vital documents at some offices at the centre of an ongoing investigation on procurement had disappeared.
They were found culpable for the loss of the vital documents and were subsequently found guilty of procurement and other financial irregularities.
The said irregularities had to do with the monies paid to the contractors of the North Campus roads project.
In August 2018, the UEW Governing Council dismissed the five principal officers of the university after a fact-finding committee had been set up to look into the matter.
Reacting to this processes, Andy Kankam said, Prof. Afful-Broni is repeating the same action that saw Prof. Avoke removed.
‘’They brought an application against these persons in the name of one Supi Kwayera. His counsel was Afenyo-Markin and they succeeded in removing them from office. How can you hold someone who knew nothing about the issue? In the coming days, Ghanaians will know about the rot under the new Vice Chancellor,’’ he said.
He is also alleging the new Vice Chancellor has spent GHc5.7 million on honorarium after taking over office, a situation that has necessitated a petition filed against him by some individuals at the university.
”In a period of 6 months, an amount of GHc5.7 million has been spent by Professor Afful-Broni and his team in the name of honorarium and all this could be referred to drinks, meat pies, kyinkyinga. And that is why some of the students are agitating because this is mind boggling; this is the tax payers money, this is a public institution and so they have written to the Auditor-General to investigate the Vice Chancellor. They have also copied the Attorney-General, the Minister of Education and the President,” he said.
To him, he has been vindicated because he said it from the beginning those who worked against the previous Vice Chancellor and the other officers, did so due to political reasons.
Andy Kankam was optimistic the truth has finally being revealed because the counsel who represented Afful-Broni has confessed he was misled.
Afenyo-Markin wants the Vice-Chancellor (VC) of the University of Education, Winneba (UEW), Professor Anthony Afful-Broni to resign because of what he says is his inability to properly manage the university.
“Afful-Broni was supposed to do [more], but he has failed. I am sure that in the next few days, if he has conscience, he will resign and leave the university because he has failed the University. Afful-Broni has failed the University; he has misled all of us – that is a matter of fact. Mistakes of the past shouldn’t be repeated”, the legislator said in a radio interview on Accra based Citi FM on Monday, March 11.
“I also find it strange that the same things Avoke and co. were doing are being repeated in a worse form. I have cautioned Prof. Afful-Broni but he won’t listen. We fought on the principle that certain things were wrong. So you don’t come in and defeat the very purpose. I will not support that. I have to be consistent. What I stand for is that the right thing is done. I am that in the next few days, the appropriate steps are taken, for the right things will be done because it is about the name of the University and not to victimize people”, he added.
