Atuguba’s bribery claim is shocking but I doubt if SC judges can be bribed-Lawyer

Private legal practitioner, lawyer Ralph Agyapong, has posited that the revelation by retired Supreme Court judge, Justice William Atuguba that, some individuals attempted to bribe judges of the apex court is not only shocking but surprising.

The lawyer told Kwame Tutu on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that, Ghanaians hold a perception that judges give rulings based on their political affiliations but this ‘’perception is very very wrong and we would have to kill it”.

The lawyer said, some Ghanaians hold the perception that judges appointed by a government are approached to toe a certain line on cases but this, the lawyer lamented is outrageous and bad for our judicial system.

He was reacting to comments by the retired judge at an event organized by the Catholic Church on Wednesday December 12, 2018.

But the lawyer believes judges are independent and do not base their rulings on their relationship with people.

‘’The perception has created a problem but I cannot hold brief for the retired judge because I was not there and cannot give details of what informed his comments. So far as I am concerned, the judiciary is independent I have my doubt that people will attempt to bribe Supreme Court judges. Justice Atuguba is not a judge you can bribe. From what I have read about him, he is not the type of person,’’ he added.

He also opined bribing high court judges will be extremely difficult not to talk of the apex court.

Justice William Atuguba has revealed attempts by some individuals to bribe judges at the apex court to rule in their favour.

He described such individuals as diabolic and evil.

He went on state that the election petition case was decided on through prayers.

‘’Also for the vilifications they are unending and sometimes the most painful thing is that, you can’t believe that some people are capable of diabolic behavior.

He went to state at a lecture organised by the Catholic Church on Wednesday December 12, 2018 that: “Apart from political challenges in the cases I sat on, there were other challenges: you can’t believe that some people will even dare try to induce even Supreme Court judges with money to decide cases in their favour.’’

But the lawyer insisted bribing Supreme Court judges will be difficult and the perception about the judiciary has caused this problem.
