Retired Ghanaian footballer, Rev. Osei Kofi, has stated emphatically that the national team will never lift a cup at the African Cup of Nations if the state fails to recognize all retired heroes.H
He quoted Ecclesiastes 5:4-6 which reads:”When you vow a vow to God, do not delay paying it, for he has no pleasure in fools. Pay what you vow. 5 It is better that you should not vow than that you should vow and not pay. 6 Let not your mouth lead you into sin, and do not say before the messenger that it was a mistake. Why should God be angry at your voice and destroy the work of your hands?-to back his claim that promises made to the retired players during their era, must be redeemed else the national team will never lift a cup at the African stage.
The man of God said the sacrifices made by these retired players have not been recognized with some of them dyeing like paupers.
He wondered why the current breeds of footballers are being awarded with juicy winning bonuses including $5,000, houses and cars.
According to him, some leaders have claimed there were no available records to substantiate the claims by retired footballers that the state promised to reward them.
He said, “a nation which does not reward it heroes is not worth dying for. After our sacrifice to the nation; winning severally trophies, the state could not redeem a promise to the old national players but recent Black Stars players have received Jeep Cherokee cars after coming first runner-up in Equatorial Guinea.
He recounted Benfica FC, an European team was cursed by its former coach who felt neglected after wining a cup for the team.
He said, the coach cursed the team and told then they will never see a cup for a period of 100 years and that same faith is what the national team is suffering from due to how the former players have been treated.
