A private legal practitioner, lawyer Captain retired Effah Darteh, has shot down calls by individuals for an independent body to be established to investigate unprofessional conduct of police officers.
He told Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm that, the Police Intelligence and Professional Standards Bureau (PIPS), is doing an excellent job hence the need for Ghanaians to trust in them.
The lawyer who praised PIPS the body which was established to probe and deal with unprofessional police officers said, his several encounters with PIPS have been a positive one.
The lawyer indicated that police officers who misconduct themselves and are reported to PIPS, are usually dismissed after it has been established they were guilty.
He was, however quick to add that, PIPS and officers who work there are too strict despite being excellent.
He was emphatic the establishment of an independent body would be unnecessary.
He was reacting to growing concerns by the public on the ability by the police to deal with persons who assault their officers and how lackadaisical they become when their men assault civilians.
To him, it would be improper for anyone to say the police does not show interest in dealing with personnel who misbehave themselves.
Commenting on the assault of three Ghanaian Times journalists by a police officer, he said, the police officer involved maybe sacked if it is established beyond reasonable doubt that he misbehaved himself.
