Ghanaian highlife dynamo, and chairman of Ghana Music Right Organisation (GHAMRO), Rex Owusu Marfo affectionately called Rex Omar has described the annual Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMAs) as a popular awards scheme.
To him, the scheme does not recognize hard work or quality work but rather focuses on recognizing popular songs by allowing the public to vote even when the popular songs lack quality.
He described Charterhouse, the organizers of the annual awards scheme as a profit making body who are interested in only making profits.
He said: ‘‘the VGMAs organized by Charterhouse is a popular award. Is not about you releasing great songs or quality songs but so long as you have a popular song and the public will vote for you, you will win. So, so far as I am concerned, it is someone’s private business…’’
He went on to state that Ghanaian musicians of today ”are only interested in releasing songs to win them awards without focusing on the quality”.
Rex Omar was reacting to claims by Amakye Dede he was forced to crown Kuami Eugene as king of highlife at the 2019 VGMAs.
He posited that there ‘’is no body with the mandate to crown any musician as the king of a music genre’’.
Commenting on the crowing of Kuami Eugene as the king of highlife by colleague musician Amakye Dede, Rex Omar said if Amakye Dede crowned Kuami Eugene in his personal capacity, then no one would dispute the fact that he is a legend when it comes to highlife and ‘’I believe he was encouraging him to do his best so I did not see anything wrong with it.’’
Meanwhile, the manager Amakye Dede has called on Ghanaians to stop blaming Amakye Dede for crowning Kuami Eugene as the next Highlife King of Ghana at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards 2019 held on 18th May.
According to Akwasi Aboagye, Amakye Dede was forced to crown Kuami Eugene on the stage. He explained that Kiki Benson, who was in charge of artiste repertoire at the VGMA 2019 called earlier to inform Amakye Dede they will like him to crown Kuami Eugene on stage.
But reacting to it, Rex Omar said ‘’if that was the scenario then I would say Charterhouse had no right to have done that. They had no reason to do that because their awards scheme did not include king of highlife. If that was the scenario and Amakye Dede did not want to embarrass them then I would also say that Charterhouse had no locus to do that. They had no right to do that. You [host] are the one making this claim but if that was the scenario, then Charterhouse erred because they had no right.’’
He further threw sheds at the scheme saying: ”although it is called Ghana Music Awards, it is not a national award. One thing people must understand is that although it is called Ghana Music Awards, it is not a national ward. It is a private business. So we must understand clearly.”
