President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has said after decades of being identified with unrest and disharmony, Dagbon has got reason to celebrate.
Delivering his 62nd Independence Day Anniversary at the Tamale Sports Stadium, the president said the decision to mark the event in Tamale was to use the opportunity to celebrate with residents of Dagbon on the theme of unity and peace.
The president said the peace and the process of reconciliation, since the enskinment of the new Yaa-Naa Mahama Abukari as Regent Dagbon has been encouraging.
Until today, January 25, 2019, Dagbon had been without a Yaa-Naa following years of protracted chieftaincy disputes which started in 2002 after the demise of the late King.
The delayed final funeral rites of two previous Yaa-Naa’s were conducted recently, after a road-map to peace developed by the Committee of Eminent Chiefs led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, was adopted and implemented, paving the way for the coronation of Yaa-Naa Abubakari Mahama II on January 25, 2019.
Speaking at the coronation on that day, the president said: ‘’ “Naa, I know you are a man of peace and unity. I know your selection as Yaa-Naa, you are a man of reconciliation. I believe you are the man to reconcile Dagbon, and blunt the age-old rivalry of Abudu versus Andani, and put Dagbon back on the path to sustained progress and prosperity, as was envisaged by one of the greatest figures in the history of Dagbon, the 18th Yaa-Naa, Naa Zangina.”
Recounting the colourful event, the president at the Independence Day Celebration expressed gratitude to the Committee of Eminent Chiefs, which was chaired by Asantehene Otumfour Osei Tutu II for developing a roadmap that has brought peace to Dagbon.
‘’After decades of being identified with unrest and disharmony, Dagbon has got reason to celebrate and it is fitting we use the opportunity of our independence celebration to converge here and celebrate with them on the theme of peace and unity,’’ the president said.
He reiterated the need for Ghanaians to be united towards national development.
