Member of Parliament for Bawku Central and former Minister of Sports Mahama Ayariga has stated on Rainbow Radio’s morning show, Frontline that the Black Stars players should not be blamed when they fail to perform at any tournament.
The former minister told Kwabena Agyapong that Ghanaians should always blame those who are managing the team because the fault may come from the management.
Mr. Ayariga said he has so much respect for the team for their fighting spirit especially Asamoah Gyan who captioned the team in Equatorial Guinea during the 2015 AFCON.
He said even though the team lost on penalties, they deserved the cup in that year.
‘’I was with them in Equatorial Guinea and I saw their fighting spirit. I have since respected them especially Asamoah Gyan for the extent he went to fight to get the team to go up to the finals. I still credit them with that tournament even though we lost out on penalties. I still believe they deserved that cup,’’ he said.
Mr. Ayariga called for proper management of the team since in his view it would make them die for the country.
He added: ‘’I think that when they don’t perform I want to blame leadership for their failures. It’s not the boys; the boys will kill themselves if you offer them leadership. Trust me, I have worked with them and I can say confidently that anytime they boys don’t perform, look for the fault not in the boys, look for the fault in those who are either managing them, those who led them there or how they were managed there. If you manage these boys well, they will die for Ghana.’’
He wished the well as they prepare for the 2019 AFCON.
