Ghana’s Vice President, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia today attended a colourful Medals Presentation Parade of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) Ghana Battalion (GHANBATT) 85 held on Thursday 22 November 2018 at the battalion headquarters in Al-Qawzah.
Prior to the parade, the Vice President and his delegation paid courtesy calls on the President of the Republic of Lebanon, HE Michel Aoun, the Speaker of Parliament, Mr Nabih Berri and the Prime Minister designate Saad Harriri. Ghana and Lebanon have strong bi-lateral relations dating back several years.
His Excellency, the Vice President also met with Ghanaians living in Beirut and paid an office call on the Head of Mission and Force Commander, Major General Stefano Del Col. Ghana has provided troops in support of the UN’s peace efforts in Lebanon since 1978.
During the Medals Presentation Ceremony, the Sector West Commander, Brig Gen Diodato Abagnara paid glowing tributes to personnel of the battalion for their professionalism and dedication to duty.
Some of the key tasks of the battalion include, conducting day and night patrols, monitoring the over 23km stretch of blue line, providing humanitarian assistance to local authorities and civilians among others.
A durbar was also held at the battalion headquarters where the Vice President interacted with troops. He also conveyed the gratitude of Ghana’s President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo for their sacrifices and asked them to continue to lift high the flag of Ghana.
The Vice President was accompanied by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration, Hon. Alhaji Mohammed Habib Tijani, Ghana’s Ambassador to Egypt, HE Paul Okoh, the Consular General to Lebanon, HE Michel Haddad and the Chief of the Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Lt Gen Obed Boamah Akwa.
