A man [name withheld] has disclosed how he attempted suicide after discovering his would be wife was infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) three days to their traditional marriage.
Sharing his story and why he wanted to kill himself, the man said he had made plans to marry his fiancée but the plans were disrupted after he discovered the wife was HIV positive when he was not.
According to him, he planned to marry the lady after discovering she was pregnant.
He however, added the pregnancy was not the main reason he made up his mind to marry the lady but was convinced she was the best person for him.
However, the situation affected his well being and felt the only option was to end his life.
Speaking to Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm Tuesday, the man said, traits of HIV were discovered in the wife after she had suffered miscarriage.
He said, ‘’when she broke the news to me, I became disturbed. She was also disturbed so I asked her to come home because I started feeling she could do something stupid. Later, I asked her to conduct another test in at a different facility which she did and the result was the same as the first one. In order to be convinced, I asked her to conduct another test at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and the result was also the same as the other two test conducted.’’
He continued: ‘’I became confused so I also conducted a test but it came out negative. After the test I became worried and asked the lady to go back to her parents. All these happened three days to our marriage ceremony. The only thing that came to my mind was to kill myself because I felt sad.’’
In disclosing how he planned killing himself, the man said he bought an alcoholic drink although he was not an alcoholic, drunk it and planned to jump off the overhead around the Accra Mall area in the bid to kill himself.
The move he noted was however interrupted by a mentally challenged man with whom he had an encounter with.
According to him, the mentally challenged man drew closer to him and asked for his contact but he got confused and wondered why a mentally challenged man would ask for his man.
He further disclosed that the mentally challenged man then took the empty bottle by him, broke it and attempted to stab him with it but struggled with him and took to his heels rescinding the decision to commit the suicide again.
He told the host he saw that as a message from God who saved him from killing himself.
Meanwhile, he has resolved to marry the lady because he still loves her.
According to him, the lady is currently on treatment and also staying with her despite the situation.
Every year close to 800 000 people take their own life and there are many more people who attempt suicide.
Research by the World Health Organisation (WHO) shows that every suicide is a tragedy that affects families, communities and entire countries and has long-lasting effects on the people left behind.
Suicide occurs throughout the lifespan and was the second leading cause of death among 15–29-year-olds globally in 2016.
Suicide does not just occur in high-income countries, but is a global phenomenon in all regions of the world. In fact, over 79% of global suicides occurred in low- and middle-income countries in 2016.
Suicide is a serious public health problem; however, suicides are preventable with timely, evidence-based and often low-cost interventions.
WHO in 2018 suggested that For national responses to be effective, a comprehensive multisectoral suicide prevention strategy is needed.
