NDC drops flags in memory of late Kofi Annan

The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), has dropped it's flags in memory of the late former UN Secretary General, Kofi Annan. This was contained in a statement issued and signed by National Chairman, Kofi Porturphy. The statement by the party read: "The NDC cannot forget the solid role Kofi Annan played to raise the flag of Ghana when he was Under Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) during the Rwanda Crisis when President Rawlings was Leader of the Republic of Ghana. It was no surprise that Kofi Annan became the substantive General Secretary of the UN." The former Secretary General of the United Nations Kofi Annan died last Saturday in Switzerland. Mr. Annan was the 7th Secretary-General of the United Nations. He was appointed as the Secretary-General on 13 December 1996 by the Security Council, and later confirmed by the General Assembly, making him the first office holder to be elected from the UN staff itself. He was re-elected for a second term in 2001, and was succeeded as Secretary-General by Ban Ki-moon on 1 January 2007. Kofi Atta Annan was born on 8 April 1938 in Kumasi, in the Ashanti region of Ghana. Annan and the UN were the co-recipients of the 2001 Nobel Peace Prize. The NDC mourns the passing away of a Son of the Soil. The NDC cannot forget the solid role Kofi Annan played to raise the flag of Ghana when he was Under Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) during the Rwanda Crisis when President Rawlings was Leader of the Republic of Ghana. It was no surprise that Kofi Annan became the substantive General Secretary of the UN. On behalf of the NDC, I salute Kofi Annan for flying high the Flag of Ghana worldwide.
