NDC and EC having backdoor meeting-NPP

Written by  Aug 05, 2016
Acting General Secretary of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) John Boadu has lambasted the General Secretary of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) Johnson Asiedu Nketiah for deceiving Ghanaians on the consensus reached on the electronic transmission of  results. According to him, it was never agreed that the Electoral Commission (EC) should transmit the results electronically. The decision by the EC to transmit the results from the 29, 000 polling centres he said was not the consensus reached, rather they agreed for the EC to scan the collated results from the collation centres from the 275 constituencies. John Boadu said “the accepted and agreed recommendation of the Electoral Reform Committee which Asiedu Nketiah was part of is that when the results get to the collation centres at the Constituency levels, hand-held scanners should be used to scan all the results and then transmit them electronically to the national collation centre”. He added, “it is further recommended that, hand-held scanners should be used to scan constituency collation forms that contain the polling station results and send electronically and directly to the national collation centre. The hard copies will be sent physically to the head office of the EC”. John Boadu stressed that the decision by the EC to contract companies to transmit the results is needless because ''we only need hand-held scanners for the EC officials and not contract for any company to do the scanning. This is what we agreed on,'' he told Kwame Tutu in an interview on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM. He stated that it is some how strange that the NDC is today deceiving Ghanaians on the agreement reached. He urged the EC to ensure that they discharge their duties with utmost integrity, transparency and credibility. The NPP he stressed will not compromise on the need for the EC to organize a clean polls. He also chided the NDC for always jumping to the defence of the EC when issues of elections comes up. He also wondered why the NDC should be aware that the EC had already the hand held scanners when the NPP is not aware of. He described the press conference by the NDC as a''busy body work, unnecessary and misleading''. He advised the NDC to call Asiedu Nketiah to order because he is disgracing the party.
