A Deputy National Organizer of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Mardi Jibril says there will be total confusion and tension if indeed the police administration has written to the Electoral Commission (EC) to increase the number of personnel on the special voters list.
A letter intercepted by Rainbow Radio and purported to have been sent from the police administration which was written by the Director General of Police Service, COP Christian Tetteh Yohunu on behalf of the IGP, is instructing all Divisional Commanders, all Regional Commanders, and all Commanders in charge of Police training schools to key in the names of Police officers whose names are not on the special voters’ register.
The memo, is also directing the aforementioned commanders, especially the commanders of the Police Training Schools, to make sure that all recruits have their names on the special voters’ list. This directive is expected to cover new recruits of the Police Service.
However, Mardi Jibril says the electoral laws does not allow new names to be added onto the special voters list especially with barely two weeks to the December 1, 2016 special voting day.
Speaking in an interview with Kwame Tutu on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, Mardi Jibril said, not all police officers are even qualified to vote on December 1 except those who will be performing a duty on the general election.
An attempt to speak to the police on the matter has failed as they have instructed that we speak to the EC. The EC on the other hand has also refused to comment on the matter.
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) says it will issue an official statement on the matter today [Tuesday].
