The Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, recently announced that, the Ministry has secured a licence from the National Communication Authority (NCA), to establish a tourism television to promote the Ghanaian culture, arts and tourism destinations in the country. The Minister further announced that, feasibility studies had been conducted and the documents forwarded to a consultant to help secure an office accommodation for the television, while feverish preparation was underway to launch it. Catherine Afeku further indicated that, the move will help rejuvenate the sector, and boost its economic contribution to the country. “We have a lot of creative content and we are competing with foreign countries which are saturating our media platform. So 9 months ago I came up with a concept that we need an outlet for our creative arts people,” she stated. However, her decision to establish the tourism tv has been described as waste of resources. Female entertainment critic, Rosindy Frimpomaa Attakorah, took a swipe at the decision stating, it would be a wastful venture. He tasked the Minister to concentrate on revamping the collapsed Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) instead wasting tax payers money to establish the tourism tv. In her view, GBC will not sell for GHc10. ''Those watching GTV are less than 3 people,’’ she posited. On his part, controversial critic, Alfred Kwame Larbi aka DJ Oxygen, also slammed the decision. He also mocked the idea to launch two mobile tv channels namely: Agya Koo TV and Daddy Lumba TV. He also quizzed the current state of the national television channels to warrant another television station. ‘’The idea to establish the tourism tv is needless. It will not help the Ministry. The idea should be scrapped. The Ministry should make use of the existing channels owned by the state to promote tourism,’’ he added. Renowned producer and CEO of Media Excel Productions Kwasi Ernest, advocated for the Tourism aspect of the entire ministry, to be separated so it would have more attention.

Female entertainment critic, Rosindy Frimpomaa Attakorah, has posited that, the state owned broadcaster, Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC), has collapsed. In her view, less than three (3) people depend on the state broadcaster for news, entertainment and information. Speaking on GH Entertainment with Mr. Handsome as host, the outspoken critic added, no investor will buy GBC for GHc10. The station has collapsed and is of less value.’’ She was reacting to the decision by the Tourism Ministry to set up a new television channel to boost tourism in the country. The Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture, is set to launch a new television channel, Tourism TV, to showcase made-in-Ghana products and the country’s rich culture and tourist sites. The Minister, Madam Catherine Afeku says the move will help rejuvenate the sector, and boost its economic contribution to the country. “We have a lot of creative content and we are competing with foreign countries which are saturating our media platform. So 9 months ago I came up with a concept that we need an outlet for our creative arts people,” she stated. But reacting to the comments by the Minister, Frimpomaa Attakorah, slammed her and described the move as unwarranted and unnecessary. She believes the Tourism TV would be a waste of public resources adding, ‘’GBC is collapsing, we are not seeing any good thing from them and you want to waste our resources to establish another TV channel,’’ she quizzed. She advised the Ministry to reconsider the decision because it will amount to nothing, she said.

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, says Africa has the resources and capacity to finance access to quality education of its citizens, and also promote the interests of the continent. According to President Akufo-Addo, “We cannot depend on other people to finance the education on our continent. I am saying that not to turn my back or to be ungrateful to all these important or noble people who have committed themselves to helping, no. But, if we make our policy dependent on other people, when their policy changes, we will suffer. But, if we make the policy for ourselves, then it means that, at all times, we will be in control of our own destiny.” President Akufo-Addo made this known on Friday, 2nd February, 2018, when he led the Ghanaian delegation to the 3rd International Conference on the “Replenishment of the Funds of the Global Partnership for Education”, at the invitation of their Excellencies, M. Macky Sall, President of the Republic of Senegal, and M. Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic. Reiterating his belief that there is an abundance of resources on the continent to finance the development of Africa, President Akufo-Addo stated that the resources can be put to good use by eliminating corruption in public life; having more intelligent arrangements for those who want to exploit the resources on the continent; and preventing the flight of capital out of the Continent. “Thabo Mbeki’s Commission that looked at the illicit flows of capital out of Africa, has estimated that for every year, in the last ten years, $50 billion goes out of Africa through illicit means. Can you imagine what those monies, if we had our eyes open, and we were not complicit in that illicit outflow, would mean for the capacity of our nations?” he asked. The challenge, therefore, confronting Africa, the President opined, is “how we can organise ourselves to make sure that the wealth, the huge wealth of this great continent, at least, in the first time in modern history, is used on behalf on the peoples of the continent, and not those outside.” President Akufo-Addo was confident that “if we are able to close that gap, we will come here to Dakar to talk about education, and not the funding of education by others. We will be talking about the quality of our education, the changes we need to make to our curricula, and the emphasis we have to place on our history and sociology.” He continued, “So that, I am not misunderstood, all those who have been making the pledges, it is all good. But, I think it is extremely important for us to get our whole mind set right. We have within us the capacity to develop and promote the interest of our continent ourselves. Let’s do it.” Importance of Education Touching on the importance of education to the advancement of the continent, President Akufo-Addo stated that the paradox of Africa having the youngest population, and being the richest continent on the planet, but with the worst living conditions can only be broken by education. He indicated that “we are going to have to make sure that every young child, boy and girl, has access to education. Not only do they have access to education, but they have access to an education that will allow them to be able to address the challenges of the 21st century.” Narrating the experience of Ghana, President Akufo-Addo stated that the country is determined to open opportunities for everybody. “So, in the last 5 years, before my government came, every year, over 100,000 young Ghanaian students were unable to transition from Junior High School to Senior High School, largely because of money. Many of them fully qualified, but their parents were unable to support their higher education. We felt that at this stage in the history of our country, the Ghanaian State should take on that responsibility. So, as from September past, Senior High School education in the public school system has been made free,” he said. The President continued, “What it has done is that the figures have revered. 90,000 more students entered senior school this year than the year before. It is the first step in ensuring that the educational system in our country, from kindergarten through primary to secondary, and ultimately through University, are open for everybody.” In confronting the question of the quality of education that will prepare the young population of Africa for the life of the 21st century, he indicated that it is only a greater focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, which will guarantee the future of the continent. “We have seen that in the development of the economies of Asia, in China, India, Japan, and Korea. That is the way forward, to be able to make the transition from poor to prosperity,” the President added. President Akufo-Addo was accompanied to the Conference by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Shirley Ayorkor Botchway MP; the Minister for Education, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh; and officials of the Presidency, Foreign and Education Ministries.

Senior Democrats have warned President Donald Trump not to use a controversial memo as a "pretext" to fire the special counsel investigating alleged Russian involvement in the US election. They warned that such action could trigger a constitutional crisis not seen since the Nixon era. The memo, written by Republicans, accuses the FBI of abusing its powers. President Trump approved the declassification of the memo and said it revealed a disgraceful story. It accuses the FBI and the justice department of using an unsubstantiated and Democratic-funded report to obtain the warrant that gave permission to spy on an aide to Mr Trump. Democrats said the release of the memo was aimed at disrupting investigations into alleged links between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin. President Trump has consistently denied any such collusion. The FBI had warned against the memo's release and said key facts had been omitted. Democrats say the memo, released on Friday, is a "shameful effort to discredit" the FBI and inquiries into Russian meddling. In a statement, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, House Minority Nancy Pelosi and eight other senior Democrats warned Mr Trump against trying to sack special counsel Robert Mueller or the deputy attorney general, Rod Rosenstein. "We write to inform you that we would consider such an unwarranted action as an attempt to obstruct justice in the Russia investigation," the statement said. They said such action could result in a constitutional crisis not seen since the 1970s when then President Richard Nixon gave orders to fire justice officials involved in the Watergate scandal. The White House later said "no changes" would be made at the Department of Justice and Mr Rosenstein was fully expected to continue in his job. The memo focuses on the court-approved wiretapping of Carter Page, a foreign policy adviser to the Trump campaign who was put under electronic surveillance by the FBI. But the memo accuses the FBI and the justice department of using unsubstantiated evidence to obtain the October 2016 warrant. It says that they did not tell the authorities their claim to the warrant was partially based on a dossier funded in part by the rival campaign of Hillary Clinton. It also says that the author of that dossier, a former British intelligence agent called Christopher Steele, told a senior justice department official that he was "desperate" that Donald Trump not win the vote. Republicans who support the release of the memo say it exposes malpractice and political bias within the FBI and justice department. Asked about the contents of the memo, Mr Trump said a lot of people should be "ashamed of themselves". Earlier on Friday the president accused top officials of politicising FBI and justice department investigations to damage his Republican party. Devin Nunes, who commissioned the memo, has said it shows "serious violations" of public trust and he hopes it will trigger reforms. Mr Page said he would use the memo in upcoming legal action against the justice department. But not all Republicans supported the release of the memo. Senator John McCain accused his party colleagues, and Mr Trump, of playing into the hands of Russian President Vladimir Putin. "Our nation's elected officials, including the president, must stop looking at this investigation through the warped lens of politics and manufacturing partisan sideshows," he said in a statement. "If we continue to undermine our own rule of law, we are doing Putin's job for him." Former FBI Director James Comey, who was fired by President Trump in May, tweeted that the memo was "dishonest and misleading". That’s it? Dishonest and misleading memo wrecked the House intel committee, destroyed trust with Intelligence Community, damaged relationship with FISA court, and inexcusably exposed classified investigation of an American citizen. For what? DOJ & FBI must keep doing their jobs. — James Comey (@Comey) February 2, 2018 SOURCE: BBC

A member of the cash-for-seat committee, Dr. Dominic Ayine is calling for the withdrawal of the final report laid before parliament yesterday [Friday]. He claims the report presented before the House did not contain the input from the Minority. Dr. Ayine told Accra based Citi Fm that, though the minority members including himself and Deputy Minority Leader, James Klutse Avedzi had detailed their perspectives on the saga, the Majority side had refused to integrate them before presenting the document to the house. “I was expecting the committee chairman to integrate the report I had prepared with what he had prepared but he stated that he would not integrate my report since it was titled ‘Minority report’.’’ Dr. Ayine, therefore, demanded that the Minority’s views be integrated in the final report, saying “I have made a complaint to leadership and they are working on it but I do not pre-empt the steps that they will take. The report should be withdrawn and the proper thing should be done in the sense that the Minority’s views should be filed and integrated as a composite document.” Portions of the Minority report cited the organizer of the Expatriate Business Award, Ashim Morton for forgery. The members, James Klutse Avedzi and Dr. Dominic Ayine in their report said Mr. Morton forged documents to cover up the fact that expatriate businessmen and women paid monies to sit closer to the president during the Awards ceremony organized on December 8, 2017. The report also alleged that the organizers of the event, Millennium Excellence Foundation (MEF) engaged in “deceitful practices” in the process of organizing the awards. According to the report, the organisers “selected companies for awards even when the companies had not submitted information meeting the designed criteria and also forged documents meant to deceive the Committee and Parliament as a whole.” It further accused the Ministry of Trade and Industry of contravening existing laws on public financial management, engaged in major ethical violations “by allowing its credibility as a public agency to be used to amass profit for a private non-profit organization which it cannot hold to public standards of accountability as well as by using the name of the President of the Republic as a means to make such profit.” “The Ministry of Trade and Industry failed or neglected to take account of possible violations of foreign corrupt practice laws and regulations in the conception, design and organization of the expatriate business awards,” the report from the Minority said. The Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Michael Oquaye set up the committee few weeks ago to probe the alleged sale of presidential seats to expatriates by the Trades Ministry.
