The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Communications Director for Awutu Senya East, Delali Sewoekpor, has taken Special Prosecutor Martin Amidu to the cleaners over his decision to prosecute Mahama Ayariga over alleged evasion of taxes.
Speaking on the matter on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, the communication director said it appears the Special Prosecutor is on a personal vendetta with the Member of Parliament for Bawku Central.i
Mahama Ayariga is facing five counts for fraudulently evading tax and dealing in foreign currency without a license.
Mr. Ayariga has been charged with the fraudulent evasion of taxes after he paid the duty of ¢6,000 when he imported three Toyota Land Cruiser vehicles instead of approved duty of ¢36,000.
The Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, accuses him of selling the three Toyota vehicles which were purchased with a loan from Parliament meant for his use as a public officer to one Fredrich Marfo of Atlas Rent A Car.
He has also been charged with abuse of his office as a public officer, for personal gain.
Mr. Ayariga is also being charged for allegedly dealing in foreign exchange without a license and transferring money to an agent in Dubai, without a requisite license when he purchased the car.
The Special Prosecutor says Mr. Ayariga also breached procurement rules in the purchase of an ambulance for a hospital in his constituency.
But Delali Sewoekpor says Mr. Amidu is on a mission to use his office to come after the legislator without any substantive reason.
He said Mr. Amidu is only capitalizing on a fracas between him and Ayariga to pin him down through his office.
According to him, the Special Prosecutor must display professionalism but he has thrown all that to the dogs and engaging in a personal vendetta.
He described the allegations against Mr. Ayariga as frivolous and unfortunate.
He said, there “are serious corruption cases he must focus on but he has abandoned all these cases and embarking on a personal vendetta. This case is bogus and should not even be prosecuted. We have serious cases like the corrupt cases at Ghana Cylinder Manufacturing Company and yet the Special Prosecutor is engaging in useless exercise.”
