MTN should consider the business consequences it will suffer should it hand over call records of Ayariga to SP-Kwakye Ofosu

A former minister under former President John Dramani Mahama, Felx Kwakye Ofosu, has admonished telecom giant MTN to fight tooth and nail to prevent the Special Prosecutor from having access to call records of Mahama Ayariga.

The SP on January 22 secured a court order from an Accra Circuit Court for Mr Ayariga’s call records of a conversation with an officer of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA).

But the former minister says this would surely affect the company should they hand over the call records as directed by the court.

In a Facebook post, he wrote: “Surely,MTN would ponder carefully over the adverse consequences that their business would suffer,if they hastily hand over call records of their client to an overreaching Special Prosecutor on a fishing expedition.

They are obliged to use every legal means to fend off the attempt to undermine the privacy of their subscribers and I expect that they will fight tooth and nail to protect their customers’ privacy.

The fight against corruption, while important, cannot become a ruse through which persons deeming themselves larger than life, seek retribution against persons they perceive as troublesome.”

Meanwhile, Mahama Ayariga, the MP for Bawku Central has hinted if fighting against the ruling.

According to Mr Ayariga, he will have handed his MTN call records to the SP if the request was made directly and not through an “over-broad order”.
