Shatta Wale’s father is an ex-convict; he cannot be chief-Ngleshie Amanfro chief

The chief of Ngleshie Amanfro, Nii Kwashie Gborbilor IV has described the father of dancehall artiste Shatta Wale, Charles Nii Armah Mensah as an ex-convict who is trying to deceive people as the substantive chief of the traditional area.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Kwabena Agyapong on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm he said, Shatta Wale’s father is always carrying himself as chief of the area in disregard to the rules of the National of Chiefs.

According to him, he has been gazetted but Shatta’s father has always found ways to carry himself as chief.

He told the host the father of the self-acclaimed dancehall artiste used the launch of Shatta Movement Fun Club to organize a durbar as the chief of Ngleshie Amanfro.

‘’I have been gazetted as the chief and so there was no way I would allow such illegality to be orchestrated,’’ he said.

Nii Gborbilor said the issue was reported to the police and upon advice, the police asked him to cancel the event because the grounds were not conducive but he found a way to allegedly bribe the crime officer in the area by name Anokye Amanianpong.

Nii Gborbilor said he became worried because Shatta’s father was not in the area to launch a fun club but organize a durbar in the capacity as a chief.

‘’We disagreed because it was not a fun club he came to launch. If Shatta Wale claims to launch a fun club what has he done for the community for him to launch a fun club in the area? We don’t such a character in Ngleshie Amanfrom so that at the end, our children will start peddling cocaine and weed,’’ he said.

He stressed, ‘’I am a gazetted chief and instead of the police to protect our interest, they have taken bribes from this man and allowing to carry himself as chief. He [Charles Nii Armah Mensah] waits till the season of Homowo to create a problem. But we are not going to allow this to happen because the government wants peace.’’

The launch of a Shatta Movement fan club at Ngleshie Amanfro in the Ga South Municipality of the Greater Accra Region on Saturday turned violent.

A faction of Nii Kwashie Gborlor IV, Chief of Ngleshie Amanfro clashed with a faction of Shatta Wale’s father.

Charles Nii Akramah Mensah, father of Wale was set to launch the Shatta movement fan club but an impending chieftaincy feud between the substantive Chief, Nii Kwashie Gborlor IV and Shatta’s father, said to be carrying himself as the chief of the area, marred the event.

The event turned bloody when the substantive chief’s faction in a bid to halt the launch allegedly attacked members of Shatta’s camp claiming Wale’s father had no right to hold himself up as the chief of the area.

Justifying the disruption of the launch, Nii Kwashie Gborbilor IV said Shatta Wale’s father has not been crowned chief and would not be entertained as chief.

He said, ‘’per our customary laws, an ex-convict cannot be crowned as a chief. On 12 December 1986, he was convicted for 5 years for forgery. He was also fined GHc50, 000 for his crime. His wife had to sell her personal belongings to go and pay for the fine and so he only spent 2 years out of the five years. He [Shatta’s father] slept in room 59 as a prisoner. We have all the documents over here.’’

He said the constitution of Ghana does not allow dishonest persons or persons who have charged of treason and another serious offence to be chiefs hence Shatta Wale’s father is not qualified to be a chief.

But reacting to these claims, Mr. Charles Nii Armah Mensah described them as ‘’rubbish and full of nonsense’’.

He was however asked to withdraw the words which he did but stressed the claims by Nii Kwashie Gborbilor IV were full of falsehood and malice.

In explaining his side of the story he said, Nii Gborbilor IV is not even a royal to qualify to occupy the Ngleshie Amanfrom stool.

He said, ‘’I also know his history. His ascendency to the stool was fraught with illegalities. He is aware of the history and he is also aware that he is not qualified to occupy the stool.’’

He added, ‘’we had a case in the Supreme Court because my name was expunged from the National House of Chiefs so I went to the court to challenge the matter.’’

Commenting on the launch, he said he had approval from the police to organize the launch the Shatta Wale Movement Fun Club hence it was not illegality.

He emphasized he won a case to make him the substantive chief in 2013 but Nii Kwashie Gborbilor IV alleged manipulated the system and had his name gazetted.

Commenting on the issue that his son [Shatta] was a bad influence he said, ‘’I do not want to use derogatory words against him so I will not say anything because if I do, I may say something awful,’’ he concluded.

Shatta Wale’s father was installed by the seven recognized family heads of the community in the Ga-South municipality of the Greater Accra Region in 2016.

He was given the stool name Nii Akramah the second.

But he has been challenged and described as an executioner and not a chief.

Ngleshie Amanfro, one of the communities within the Ga south municipality originated from the Ajumaku Division of James Town and resettled at its current location by the government in 1978, due to the creation of the Weija Lake.
