Nothing can stop Prez from allowing Chinese to mine our bauxite except non-violent protests-Advocate

The Regional Youth Coordinator for Africa at Royal Commonwealth Society who is also the Founder of Solar Ghana and a leading member at Ghana Youth Environmental Movement, Gideon Marcel Commey, has charged Ghanaians to hit the streets in protest against the decision by government to allow the Chinese to mine bauxite in the Atewa forest.

The advocate who led a campaign which forced government of Ghana to reject the proposed $1.5 billion coal project which was to be established in the Ekumfi Aboano District in the country’s central region in 2016 said only peaceful protests by citizens would stop government from allowing the mining of bauxite to be implemented.

He made reference to an assessment done by Rocha Ghana warning g of darning consequences should Ghana allow the Chinese to mine Bauxite in the Atewa forest.

To him, the president will not give up due to the mouth-watering deal we have gained from the Chinese hence the need for Ghanaians to hit the streets in protest against the decision.

‘’Our President who is the global Co-Chair of the SDGs will just not budge, the China deal is just too mouth-watering. I have always insisted that what will save Atewa is radical non-violent action and not social media talk. If we claim we care about the situation why are we not mobilising people on the streets?’’

He slammed civil society groups for failing to take up the matter and initiate actions to pressure government to rescind its decision to allow the Chinese mine Bauxite in the Atewa forest.

‘’I have always insisted that what will save Atewa is radical non-violent action and not social media talk. If we claim we care about the situation why are we not mobilising people on the streets? Why are we not occupying buildings? Why are we not in Atewa campaigning now?’’

Meanwhile, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has given assurances that the government’s plan to have bauxite mined in the country’s largest surviving natural rainforest, the Atewa forest, will not in any way destroy the environment.

The president believes that the technology to be adopted by the miners would reduce the impact of the mining activity on the quality of life of persons whose livelihoods depend on the forest’s resources.

He made the statement during the Sustainable Ocean Industries Conference organised under the auspices of the Petroleum Commission of Ghana, Aker Energy and the Norwegian Embassy in Ghana.

“Beginning now, the full scale exploitation of Ghanaian bauxite resources [will commence]. We are in a better place, technology-wise than we would have been 20, 30 years ago [to do this]…I am satisfied by what I have been told and what has been demonstrated to me that, it is possible for us to get that red matter out without disturbing the wildlife that there is in the Atewa mountains,” the President said.

“This is something that we have to keep an eye on all the time. A very major part of any concession that you give to people to come to look for oil in our waters has environmental impact. It is important that those who are responsible for making that assessment are accurate, they are true, they are honest. They don’t give passes corruptly,” Nana Akufo-Addo added.

I have no letter or long post to write about Government of Ghana (GoG) decision to clear forest and mine bauxite at Atewa. A Rocha Ghana‘s experts have done extensive environmental impact and socio-economic analysis to show that this will be a terrible mistake going forward. Our President who is the global Co-Chair of the SDGs will just not budge, the China deal is just too mouth-watering. I have always insisted that what will save Atewa is radical non-violent action and not social media talk. If we claim we care about the situation why are we not mobilising people on the streets? Why are we not occupying buildings? Why are we not in Atewa campaigning now? Didn’t we bring coal power on its knees doing this? Shame unto all you civil society giants and the numerous environment platforms who are dead silent!!!
