International Boxing Federation (IBF) Lightweight world champion, has presented his world title to the Chief Executive Officer of the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA), Hon Mohammed Adjei Sowah.
Commey who defeated Russia’s Isa Chaniev in two rounds at the Ford Centre in Frisco, Texas, on February 2, 2019 to win the vacant the International Boxing Federation Lightweight World Title, made the presentation when he paid a courtesy call on the Mayor at the Accra City Hall on Wednesday.
Commey was accompanied by his Manager, Michael Amo Bediako, Local Coach, Isaac Aryee as well as some members of the Ronsey Supporters Union.
Mayor Sowah congratulated the young champion on his achievement and encouraged him to be relentless in his efforts to maintain his title since his profession had created more jobs for the youth.
He noted that his victory had made the nation happy and proud and expressed the Assembly’s commitment to support the 31-year-old world champion to succeed in his career.
Mayor Sowah assured him of the Assembly’s continuous support towards promoting sports in the city, especially the lesser known sports to generate employment for the youth.
“Sports bring development in the city so we at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) will continue to support the work you are doing here in Accra,” he assured.
He disclosed that government has allocated additional funds for the completion of other sporting facilities at the Trust Sports Emporium. Adding that, boxing was gradually eradicating poverty and empowering the youth in Bukom, the boxing hub of Ghana.
The Manager of Richard Commey, Mr. Michael Amo Bediako, revealed that Bukom has created more world boxing champions than any other city in the world and it was his aim to create more world champions from the area.
He described Commey as hard-working and determined young man full of strength who can achieve more than he has.
Richard Commey on his part said he was focused on fighting internationally for more world titles and would not allow himself to be distracted adding that, he worked hard for the opportunity and his hard work paid off for him.
Commey 31 is Ghana’s ninth world champion after DK Poison, Azumah Nelson, Nana Yaw Konadu, Ike Quartey, Alfred Kotey, Joseph Agbeko, Joshua Clottey, and Isaac Dogboe.
