President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced Sfwi Wiawso as the capital of the newly created Western North Region.
Speaking at a ceremony to hand over the to present the Constitutional Instrument (CI) 117 to the Omanhene of the Sefwi Anhwiaso Traditional Area, Ogyeahohoo Yaw Gyebi II, who is also President of the Western Regional House of Chiefs at the Jubilee House, Accra, the president said, ‘’as a case for the other newly created regions, I have taken the decision to appoint the current Minisrter for the Western Region, Dr. Kwaku Afriyie, MP for Sefwi Wiawso, as caretaker Minister for Western North Region, until a substantive appointment is made.
The4 president said an allocation of GHc20 million has been made for the provision of critical infrastructure to enable Western North Region take off smoothly. My government is committed to the growth, progress and success of Western-North Region, and we will work to make sure this happens.’’
The president in his address indicated that ‘’to the people of the municipalities and districts, of Aowin,n Bia East, Bibiani-Anhwiaso-Bekwai, Bodi, Juaboso, Sefwi Akomtombra, Sefwi Wiawso and Suaman, I can assure you that the Western administrative region has been created to bringt governance closer to you, and and accelerate your socio-economic development.’’
The president further stated that it is an open secret that the northern part of the Western Region is resource-rich, but has not, like most parts of the nation, developed fully its economic potential.’’
The creation the new regions is a manifesto promise by the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) pledged the creation of four regions from the Western, Northern, Brong Ahafo, and Volta Regions. ‘’However, the Western-North Region was specifically mentioned by name in the Manifesto, and we pledged to help create it, if its residents so wished, in order to open it up for4 accelerated development.’’
‘’You have always wanted it, you made a strong case for it when I visited Bodi on 12th August, 2016, then as presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), and now you have it.’’
