Special barcodes being designed to help prevent smuggling of fertilizers under PFJ-MoFA


Ridwan Issah Khalifah, aide to the Agric Minister, Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto, has said the ministry has initiated measures to prevent the smuggling of fertilizers under the Planting for and Jobs programme.

 

He said, a special embossment on the bags of fertilizers has been adopted to help prevent the smuggling.

 

A special IT firm he revealed has been contracted to design special barcodes for the fertilizers in order to help track and identify all activities of smugglers.

 

The Ministry will this year, distribute 300, 000 tonnes of fertilizers to registered farmers this year under the Planting for Food and Jobs.

 

An additional 20, 000 tonnes of organic fertilizers will be supplied to the farmers for organic farming,.

 

He said 34 out of 77 private companies that applied to distribute the fertilizers have been shortlisted to supply the inorganic type, while eight would supply the organic fertilizers.

The subsidised price of the NPK (all types will be GHc75 per 50kg, while Urea will go for GHc70 for the same unit.

The price for organic fertilizer (granular) will sell for GHc45 per 25kg, while compost will go for GHc29 per GHc50kg.

That of liquid will see for GHc19.
