VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED: Buried bodies at Awudome Cemetery coming out of graves

There could be a looming danger if authorities fail to take measures in addressing the lack of space at the Awudome cemetery.

A recent visit to the cemetery has exposed the health risk and danger the situation poses to residents in the area.

Skulls of dead bodies were seen coming out of their graves when Rainbow Radio’s reporters visited the cemetery last weekend.

The graves with the skulls coming out were not the tiled ones but the normal traditional graves.

Awudome is the largest cemetery in Accra in terms of space but it was predicted the space would be full to capacity in 2012.

As at 2010, the space left at the cemetery was just 3%.

The then director of health at the Accra Metropolitan Assembly, Dr. Anim Boateng told the media that the cemetery would reach its full capacity in two years time (thus by the year 2012).

He had explained that it took about a hundred years for ninety seven (97) percent of land space in the Awudome cemetery to get used up.

Aside the capacity situation, criminals have also taken over the cemetery and operate from there.

Some use the place as hideout where pounce on people to steal their valuables.

Maintenance of the cemeteries is another challenge at the cemetery.

The cemetery rarely gets cleared of the weed that is taking over portions of the burial ground.
