Don’t declare results-EC to political parties

December 6, 2020

The Electoral Commission (EC) has stated it is the only body mandated by law to declare the 2020 results of the December 7, 2020 elections.

Addressing the media on Sunday, December 7, 2020, the EC chair Mrs. Jean Mensa indicated that with the total commitment of their trained staff, the EC declare the presidential results 24 hours after the close of polls.

She said the EC would only be receiving results from the 16 regions and not the 2175 constituencies.

What this means is that every collation centre would send their results to the regional collation centre for the regional centre to send them to the headquarters.

She added the EC will not engage in electronic transmission but will rely on the fax sent to them by their electoral officers.

She reiterated the readiness of the EC to declare the results in 24 hours.

”By law, it is the EC is the only body and institution clothed with power and authority to declare presidential and parliamentary results. We, therefore, caution persons and all stakeholders particularly political parties to desist from declaring results.

”We have indicated our intention to declare the final certified results in a timely manner and we will do so God being our helper. We, therefore, call on our stakeholders to remain patient and leave the EC to perform its functions.”
