Election 2020: Gunshots fired @ centre where Hawa Koomson fired her shots during the registration exercise

Gunshots have been fired at the same polling station where the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Awutu Senya East Constituency, Mavis Hawa Koomson admitted to firing shots during the voter registration exercise.

Rainbow Radio’s Nana Yaw Asare reporting from the scene said journalists had to run for their lives because a V8 vehicle drove to the area which was close to Naa Koryo, the NDC parliamentary candidate’s house, and started firing at her vehicle.

One person he disclosed suffered gunshot wounds and yet to see treatment at the hospital.

There is currently a heavy security presence in the polling station.

On Monday (July 20, 2020) the incumbent MP fired gunshots explaining that she did that “to protect herself”.

Ms Koomson who doubles as the Minister of Special Development Initiatives in a television interview on Adom TV on Monday evening said she fired “warning shots” because “there were no police around”.

She had explained that she received information last week Thursday when she visited the Step to Christ registration centre, that members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) were transporting [bussing] people from outside the constituency, from Gomoa East and Nsawam to come and register at the Step to Christ polling station.

A similar incident has occurred on voting day and this has traumatized the voters at the centre and asked the security agencies to deal with the matter.
