‘EC announced fake results, Techiman South could have pushed for a run-off’-Institute

December 14, 2020

The Executive Director of Research and Grant Institute of Ghana Dr. Samuel Adjorlolo has suggested that technically the Electoral Commission erred in declaring the 2020 presidential election results without that of Techiman South.

According to him, if the votes in that constituency were added to candidate John Dramani Mahama, it would have reduced the percentage of candidate Akufo-Addo to not more than 49%, and the polls would have gone into a run-off.

The Electoral Commission on December 9, 2020, declared President Akufo-Addo as the winner of the 2020 presidential election without the results from Techiman South Constituency.

The Chairperson, Mrs. Jean Mensa, was yet to receive the results from the constituency in the Bono East region because it is being contested.

She stated that the EC believed that the results from the Techiman South polls will not have any effect on the general outcome.

“Currently, the results we have declared exclude that of the Techiman South which has a total voter population of 128,018.

“It is important to note that the difference between the total number of votes between the first and second candidates is 515,524 votes.”

“As a result, if we were to add the 128,018 full results to the results of the second candidate, it will not change the outcome of the election hence the declaration of the results,” Mrs. Mensa added.

But Dr. Adjorlolo said per their calculations, the figure would have reduced the percentage of Akufo-Addo to not more than 49%.

”Technically, EC shouldn’t have come to make that announcement on 9th of December without the results from Techiman South,”

He said the law requires the EC to take its time so that everything would be in order before a declaration.

”The rush to make an announcement which has changed in 48 hours makes no sense. Why the rush?”

The EC he added failed to consider the Techimana South results because the percentage used in the declaration was wrong.

”If the EC used the accurate figures, they would have known that the polls should have gone into a run-off. But they used inaccurate figures. The fault is from the EC using the 51% and not the accurate figure of 50% the president garnered.”

Ro him, the EC has put itself in a position that confirms the allegations that the polls were rigged because the results announced were not genuine.
