Power FM’s Journalist Oheneba Boamah Bennie, who was arrested by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID)) for allegedly threatening the President has been released from Police Custody.
He was released at 5:15pm on Wednesday, 16th December, 2020.
His lead counsel Lawyer Francis-Xavier Sosu had asked the police to either send him to court or have him released.
He argued that keeping his client beyond 48 hours was a violation of Article 14 of the 1992 Constitution.
Lawyer Sosu insisted that the offense in question was a misdemeanor and had to do with an alleged statement which the police already had and did not require any complex investigation.
He added that keeping the journalist in detention beyond the Constitutional requirement amounted to an abuse of power by the officers of the Ghana Police Service.
The journalist was kept in custody on allegation of Offensive Conduct conducive for breach of the Peace under Sections 207 and 208 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960, Act 29.
He was admitted on bail in the sum of GHc 100,000 with two sureties.
He is to report to the Police on 17th Dec, 2020.
