The Minority in Parliament has asked the Commander-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, to take immediate steps to demilitarise the country.
The Minority says the military and their officers have been reduced to carrying bags and providing protection for public officers when that is not part of their functions.
Minority Leader Haruna Iddrisu said the President must restore the dignity of the military and resource the Police Service if they are weak.
He said the Police should be allowed to perform its constitutional role in maintaining law and order and collaborate with GAF when necessary.
”We are demanding that President Akufo-Addo the Commander-In-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces take immediate and necessary steps to demilitarise Ghana and to allow the Ghana Police Service to play its proper and constitutional role of maintaining order, where necessary, to collaborate with GAF.
But we find it very despicable that men and women in uniform particularly in the GAF will now be reduced to holding bags of key public officials. That is not the Ghana Armed Forces we know. We want him to restore dignity, honour and the respect of the Ghana Armed Forces. They should intervene in matters of maintaining law and order. We are with him of protecting the lives of Ghanaians at all times. But it is becoming a sight of nuisance seeing armed wielding men of the GAF all over, even CEOs are guarded and followed by men in military uniform. That is not right.”
He added if GPS has become weaker, then they want the necessary reforms to strengthen them as responsible for maintaining law and order.
