National Communication Director for Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) Mr. Samuel Owusu Afriyie has averred traditional leaders cannot be trusted in supporting the fight against galamsey.
Contributing to the discussion on the fight against galamsey, he said the chiefs cannot be trusted because they are the ones who sell the lands to illegal miners to engage in the act.
He said foreigners would by their authority invade lands and start galamsey without the role of some chiefs and landowners in the affected areas.
He said these chiefs have had their integrity and credibility tainted because of their greed, selfishness and wanton sale of lands to multiple persons.
Mr. Owusu Afriyie said even when the lands are sold, the gains made are not used to benefit the lives of residents in the areas.
He reiterated the position of the LPG to regularise galamsey and allow persons involved to get a license to operate.
”If Ghanaians had voted for us, we would have regulated galamsey. The resources are for Ghanaians and the people must benefit from them,” he noted.
