A communication team member of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Richard Manuribe, has opined that persons who engage in galamsey are illiterates and ex-convicts.
He was contributing to a discussion on the fight against galamsey and how we could end the menace.
He argued those in illegal mining are ex-convicts rejected by society.
He said galamsey is destroying our lands and water bodies and it was about time we find a lasting solution to the problem.
He said our forest reserves are also being depleted through the activities of illegal miners.
He also claimed some of the chiefs, security personnel have all been compromised hence their inability to deal with the canker.
Manuribe was worried illegal miners are not worried about the dangers associated with the work they do.
He was hopeful the new Minister Abu Jinapor will succeed in the fight against illegal mining.
He, therefore, wants Ghanaians to support him.
