The Ghana Online Drivers Union has today, Tuesday, May 11 2021, embarked on a sit-down strike over what they have described as poor conditions of service.
President of the Union Francis Kweku Tenge speaking, on Frontline on Rainbow Radio 87.5Fm, said operators including Uber, Bolt, Yango and other online driving apps are not treating them fairly.
According to him, the strike will end on Wednesday, May 12, 2021.
He explained that the percentage the operators charge coupled with promotions they run is depriving them of their livelihood.
He complained that they end with nothing after paying the car owners and purchasing fuel for their work.
He disclosed the total number of members is over 100,000 and work in Accra, Cape Coast, Kumasi and Takoradi.
He told host Kwabena Agyapong that they have petitioned President Akufo-Addo after several efforts together authorities at the Transport Ministry to address their concerns failed.
He said several letters they also wrote to the online operators to address their poor working conditions did not materialize.
He said the operators don’t pay their SSNIT contributions, insurance packages and any form of benefits despite the threats to their lives.
He lamented that some riders who book them use unidentified names especially when they want to attack and rob them.
