The ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) says President Akufo-Addo has done a lot to deal with corruption.
The party indicated that it was for the various institutions in charge of corruption to deal with the canker.
Communication Director Yaw Buaben Asamoa said this at a press briefing on Tuesday, May 18, 2021, at the party’s headquarters in Accra.
He claimed that the President had done his best in fighting corruption, and as a people, we have to demand effective from all bodies mandated by the law to fight corruption.
He opined that bodies such as EOCO, Office of Special Prosecutor, and the rest, should up their game and deal with corruption.
”You should not expect the President to come and sit in your offices before you work. You have to up your game and deal with the canker. If anyone should claim that the President has dealt with corruption, then the person is not objective. All these bodies have been given the mandate to fight corruption.”
On Monday, May 3, 2021, President Akufo-Addo granted an interview to CNN, discussing Ghana’s economic development, business growth, and corruption.
CNN’s Zain Asher, in an interview with the President, asked about what his government has done to fight corruption in Ghana.
In his response he said: ” . .A lot has been done, and it has reflected in Ghana’s growing position and rankings of corruption in the world. We’ve gone up several notches since I came into office because we are dealing with these matters at the basic level.”
However, the claims by the President were false since Ghana’s CPI score in 2020, according to Transparency International, was 43 revealing that the country’s performance on corruption, compared to previous years, has dropped.
Between 2013 to 2016, Ghana obtained scores of 46, 48, 47 and 43 with ranks of 63/180, 61/180, 56/180, and 70/180 in the Corruption Perception Index (CPI).
The figures resulted in an average score of 46 during the four years of the Mahama Administration.
However, between 2017 and 2020, under President Akufo-Addo, Ghana obtained scores of 40, 41, 41 and 43 with ranks of 81/180, 78/180, 80/180, and 75/180.
The figures represented an average score of 41.25.
The difference between the former administration and this administration is 4.75.
